CALIFORNIA Landlords Say NO to Fridges: Will OR and WA Be Next?
Do you take it for granted that items like a refrigerator and stove will be provided inside your next apartment? For many apartment seekers in California, it is not a given they will get one.
This news should shock me but as I learned when searching for info on rental properties in Italy and Germany, furnishings like a stove and a fridge are hard to come by. That is so weird!
Landlords in California don’t have to provide renters a fridge and this is according to state law.
“These items are usually considered “amenities,” and their absence does not make a dwelling unit unfit for living…However, a tenant may have a right to a reduced rent if a landlord does not provide certain amenities that are part of the tenant’s lease.” California Courts
I think the only thing a tenant should be worried about concerning a fridge in their apartment is where to place the food.
WILL WASHINGTON AND OREGON BE NEXT TO GET RID OF FRIDGES FOR TENANTS?
In Oregon and Washington state, landlords are not legally required to provide refrigerators to tenants unless the rental agreement states otherwise. This law is likely not to change anytime soon because it is not up for review in the current 60-day legislative session.
“The landlord (or his or her representative) must be accessible to the tenant and must: Maintain appliances furnished with the rental unit…” Washington State Bar Association
